Lesson 5
How to Get Involved in Your Child's Education

School-info4u.com wants you to understand the importance of learning about your child's school environment. We have put together some useful tips on 'how to get involved in your child's education'.

  • Going along to your child's school and spending time in their classroom.

  • Getting involved with or attending school events and performances.

  • Joining the Parent-Teacher Association- PTA, and/or any other parent and carer group.

  • Volunteering as a helper on school trips, in the library or the after school club.

  • Volunteering as a mentor or classroom assistant.

  • Reading all the newsletters that your child brings home from school, this will contain important information.

  • Attending all meetings at your child’s school and requesting meetings of your own.

‘Tell me and I'll forget. Show me, and I may not remember. Involve me, and I'll understand’. Native American Proverb

Other ways to get involved with your child’s education

  • It’s also a good idea to attend parent’s evenings/open days to find out what is going on. This will also be a perfect opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with teachers and professionals. If your child is struggling with school life and/or schoolwork, seek support.

  • Try to attend your child’s target setting day. This usually happens at least once a year. You and your child will get the opportunity to meet with your child’s tutor and/or head of year to agree targets for your child.

  • Support your child with his/her homework.

  • Ensure that your child has a quiet place to do their homework, away from distractions and interruptions.

  • Make sure you find out what the deadlines are for your child's homework. You will then be able to remind your child to do the homework and hand it in. Get into the habit of reading and signing your child’s homework diary/journal.

  • You should also read with your child and talk to them about their day. Ask them about their schoolwork, if they had any problems at school and if so how they dealt with it etc.

  • It would also be useful for you to know what type of help they receive at school when they do experience problems and what you could do to help them too.

‘He who knows nothing doubts nothing’. Italian Proverb
