Lesson 2
Take Control of Your Child's Education

School-info4u.com believes that you need to take control of your child’s education. This begins at home. You shouldn’t have a casual approach to this because if you do you will be gambling with your child’s education.

If you just accept whatever type of education is thrown at your child, you will be left wondering why your child is not doing well. Take an interest in the educational progress of your child by getting more involved in their academic life.

The greatest education for your child is going to come from the place where they spend the most time, which will either be at home or on the streets.

Don’t think that you have the luxury of leaving your responsibilities in the hands of others, because there is a high probability that things will fall apart.

You should seriously consider some home tutoring for your child. Your child will benefit from just one or two hours of home tutoring at weekends or attending a supplementary school.

‘If you don't run your own life, somebody else will’. John Atkinson

R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Try to introduce your child to Maya Angelou poems, because they are inspiring and help to raise self-esteem, self-respect and pride.

Maya Angelou famously said, ‘If we lose love and self respect for each other, this is how we finally die’. It goes without saying that if we want our children to be respectful we must ensure that we model respect to them.

Good manners don’t cost anything and it will benefit your child if you teach them this from an early age. Encourage your child to have self-respect and respect for others.

‘Break down’ the meaning of respect to them and teach them that they have to earn the respect that they want.

‘Respect commands itself and can neither be given nor withheld when it is due’. Eldridge Cleaver

‘Think highly of yourself, for the world takes you at your own estimate’.

Educational resources

If you want to make sure that your child reaches his or her full learning potential it is important to invest in educational resources. Even if your child is gifted and talented, the following types of resources will help them to develop their intellect:

  • Books

  • CD ROMs

  • Tapes and DVD’s

  • A computer

  • Software

  • Puzzles and Board games

  • Arts and crafts materials etc

Ultimately it is important to have high expectations of your child and encourage them to do the best they can. This could even kick start you into developing your own skills too.

It’s never too late for you to get back into education. You can enroll on an evening course or study from home- distance learning. You can refer to our support groups and services section for more advice about adult education.

The resources are there and school-info4u.com will help you find them.
